Why I Have Coaches

I’m a trainer and I have a trainer.

A lot of people ask me why I do this, when I know how to program workouts and I obviously like to work out and train hard.

The real reason for having a trainer and a coach is not because I don’t know what to do.

Could I program my own training sessions?

Of course. Am I human and I have days that I don’t want to train?

Absolutely.

Do I also, selfishly, write programs that contain exercises that I love and ignore the exercises that are tough for me?

Of course I do. I love squats, heavy pressing, sled pushing and anything Kettlebell related.

I have to really push myself to do burpees, lunges and single leg dead lifts.

My coach makes me do them.

I have a trainer, John Romaniello, who lives in the LA area and he writes all my programs and I report to him each week with my macros (protein, carbs and fat) for the week.

I send him pictures each month and track my measurements.

This is a relationship based on trust. I KNOW I could write my own programs, but I trust John to push me to get RESULTS. I want to lose fat, gain muscle and stay lean. John helps me do that.

It also keeps me accountable to someone other than myself, because it’s just human nature to push ourselves more when someone else is “watching.”

Does it make me any less of a trainer?

Nope, I believe it’s the opposite. Hell, I BELIEVE in what I teach others. You need a coach to push you, inspire you and keep you on track with your goals.

Plus it’s nice to just get into the gym and not think about what I need to do. Instead I just get there and do what Roman says. That’s pretty sweet if you ask me. I think our clients have the right idea 🙂

I have coaches in all areas of my life. Roman is my training coach. I have a business coach that I meet with on a monthly basis, he keeps me accountable and makes sure that I’m on track with my business goals.

I also have a business mastermind group that I’m in. We meet every 3-4 months and this is just another way to keep ourselves accountable get motivated by likeminded people. A mentor of mine years ago told me to always try to always feel like the dumbest person in the room. It’s a crappy feeling at first, but you learn a whole lot more than when you’re the smartest in the room 🙂

The last piece of coaching that I do is with my business therapist. Business therapist, sounds weird huh?

He is a therapist that works strictly with business owners and entrepreneurs and helps me work through a lot of the issues that are holding me back so I don’t slow down the growth of the business or the growth of my team. We talk about mindset, finding a balance between being driven and being grateful for what I have now and all the limiting beliefs that I let get in the way of my success and helping my clients.

Some people may think this is excessive. I think it’s exactly what you need to see results. I’m not satisfied to stay at my “average” potential. I know there’s more and I have other people to help me crack into it.

I also don’t want to rely on myself. I don’t want to trust myself to get better without a clear focus and a strategic path. Sometimes I can do that on my own, sometimes I need help.

So why do we hire coaches in general?

Accountability. Structure. Motivation. Inspiration.

On some days it’s only one of those things. On some days it’s all of them.

The only way to get better is to challenge yourself outside your limits and as humans we want to stay in our warm comfortable little zone. Other people will crack you out of that.
