Congratulations to our Client of the Month in Somerville: Jan Howson!

1.     What is your hometown?

Madison, NJ

2.     What brought you to DPT?

I wanted to change things up from my old gym.  I was looking for a place that takes a “whole body” approach that addresses nutrition and lifestyle in addition to exercise.

3.     How long have you been training with us?

I’ve been training at DPT for three years now.

4.     What do you do in the “real world?” (job, family, pets, etc)

I work as a clinical psychologist at the all-male federal prison in Devens, MA.  I work with the inmates who have severe mental illness, like schizophrenia.  I live in Medford with my girlfriend, Emily, and Boston Terrier, Bud.

5.     What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about you?

I went to magic camp when I was a kid.

6.     What is your favorite exercise and why?

I like pull-ups because I like bodyweight exercises, and I also think they’re a good metric of my strength.

7.     What is your biggest gym achievement so far?

My biggest DPT achievement is my five rep max Clean and Jerk at 115 lbs. Before DPT, 115 lbs. was my one rep max.

8.     What inspires and motivates you?

I find it motivating to jog with my dog alongside me — or any dog, for that matter — because the dog keeps me company but there’s no expectation to talk to it while I’m running.

9.     What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining or who has just joined DPT?

I would say that DPT is a very safe space.  It’s safe to begin or restart your journey towards a more healthy you without fear of judgment, unreasonable expectations, or competition.  The community, starting with the staff leadership, is outrageously kind and supportive.
