Raise the Bar ~ What’s next for you?

You have an impact…

What happens when you decide to raise the standards in your life? When you demand more from yourself & your body?

Well, short answer everything changes.

But did you realize the impact on those around you? Did you know that you impact those you love the most when you decide to change your health, your way of living to raise your standards?

You do……

And you impact all those who come in contact with you, including your DPT community.

When your family, friends & gym-mates see you taking on challenges, making different choices & working it hard it makes them all want to do the same. …..you make them believe they can.

You literally change the way they view what is possible…. You Raise the Bar for all those around you.

In 2017 we started the tradition of celebrating people who change their standard of living & Raised the Bar for us all by losing 50lbs or more.

In 2018 we continue to push, demand more & have charted a course for you to “Raise the Bar” in your own way.

What would you tell someone just starting?

For someone just starting I would say don’t be afraid. I remember how scared I was my first week, but that feeling quickly passed when I realized this was not your typical gym! Everyone here is so nice and always willing to answer a question or help you out. Don’t worry about being the slowest or not being able to do something, because it just doesn’t happen. There are modifications to everything to get you built up and no one works alone! Invest in a foam roller and a stretch out strap, and drink water like it’s your job!

What would you tell someone struggling to continue?

For someone struggling to continue, I would say keep going! I know how hard it is, and every day is a new day to succeed and make good decisions. Don’t let one bad day, bad week, bad month, or bad year keep you from giving up on yourself and all that you CAN accomplish! Success happens one good decision at a time.

What can I do now that I couldn’t do?

Too many things to list! The one that stands out most is a variation of the pull up. I remember the first time Emily had me do this I couldn’t do it at all and was so frustrated I cried. Now, I can do it no problem and can even do a few of the next difficulty level! V-ups and hollow holds are always a reminder of how I could never lift and hold my legs up, but now I can do them! So many things I never thought I could do, but now I can because of the encouragement and being always challenged here at DPT.

Don’t give up!! Stay committed, it does get “easier”.  Yes, you’ll be sore, tired, frustrated, and all sorts of other emotions but stay with it.  The hardest part is over and that was getting the courage to sign up and come for your first class.  It only gets better from here.  Listen to the coaches, they are here to help guide and support you.  Drink plenty of water and stretch, and keep coming back no matter how sore.

What would you tell someone struggling to continue?

Don’t call it quits, fight through it. Believe in yourself, this is not the end of the world.  Trust in the coaches and your peers.  We are all here for the same reason, to get healthy.  There is an AMAZING support team here to help you and who want to help you. To me that’s one of the biggest parts here is that the DPT family all want to help you achieve your goals.  We motivate and encourage each other.  Coaches push our limits to our boundaries, but they do this because they know we can do so much more than what we give ourselves credit for.

What can you do now that makes you proud?

There are so many things that make me proud now, this experience has given me my life back.  I now have self-confidence in myself that I thought was impossible to have.

Proud that I have stuck with the program. Proud every time I finish a class. Proud I found the confidence to leave a job that was unhealthy for me. Proud that I found the best job for me & that lets me go to class. Proud that I can do physical activities with my family. Proud that I changed my lifestyle. Proud that I started a kickball team at work & I’m not the worse player. Proud now to just be myself.

No matter what happens, I will always be thankful for DPT.  Last May I decided to change my lifestyle and I couldn’t be more excited about doing it with DPT.  I will say this family and my own have shown me the support that I would of not have gotten from any other place.  Everyone here really cares and listens to you and goes above and beyond to make sure you are at your best.  I honestly was the typical overweight couch potato that could have cared less about doing anything.  But now, I have changed my life around and can say if I can do this then you can do this because when I told my family a year ago I wanted to do this they all laughed and said I wouldn’t last because of how I was.  Well coming here, and seeing everything and the change that was happening made me want to push harder.  So believe me when I say if I can do this, then you can too!

What would you tell someone just starting?

Congrats for starting – very brave of you. What you’re doing is hard… very hard, but so worth it – YOU are worth it. Celebrate every little accomplishment because your end result is just the sum of all your little accomplishments along the way. Feeling strong is a great feeling!

What would you tell someone struggling to continue?

Look more at how far you’ve come and less at how far you have to go.  Each little positive thing you can do pushes you forward.  Remember that you’re worth it and you can do this. Setbacks happen to all of us, just acknowledge them and move on – don’t beat yourself up over them.  Also, you can do more than you think you can… try lifting just a little heavier and surprise yourself.

What can you do now that makes you proud?

I can keep up with my family whether it’s downhill skiing or a crazy hard hike or walking for miles and miles, whatever they can come up with – I can do it! Also… I CAN DO A CHIN-UP!!!

Please add anything else you want to!

Do the nutrition program and keep an open mind about what you learn… there’s a lot to it that takes a lot of time to process, but putting in the work does pay off.  So does logging everything you put in your mouth and working out 3 times a week!

What would you tell someone just starting?

Don’t give up.  You’ll be sore and probably can’t do most of the exercises correctly but it will come over time and there are plenty of us there that can help support you or laugh with you when you look completely ridiculous trying.

What would you tell someone struggling to continue?

Find a buddy that will make you accountable, someone that expects to see you in class and if you aren’t will reach out and check on you.  Remember why you’re here, its so easy to lose focus in the day-to-day as to why we started this journey.  Get back up from where you stumbled.  We all go off course but if you recognize it and course correct it is easier then giving up and starting over from the beginning.  One of my favorite quotes (no idea who said it first) is “If it were easy everyone would do it”!

What can you do now that makes you proud?

Push ups – I can still remember struggling on my knees to get 5 in a row… Box jumps – when I started I couldn’t even get up on the 12″ box and today I’m up to 20″.  Oh and flipping Roxanne, she’s a test of strength for sure.
