Congratulations to our Client of the Month in Somerville: Dave Shadrick!
What is your hometown?
East Providence, RI. The East Providence Townies. That is our actual mascot, oddly enough. Doesn’t really seem like a compliment.
What brought you to DPT?
I had met Callie, and was looking to try something different. I had begun to miss too many workouts on my own, and was lacking creativity in my exercise program.
How long have you been training with us?
7 years now, and I will continue this forever.
What do you do in the “real world?” (job, family, pets, etc)
I am a Chiropractor in Davis Square, and I teach at Tufts Medical School. Two kids, Liam, 10, and Cora, 7. My wife Megan also works out at Durbrow Performance. If she puts in some more effort, especially with her planks, then perhaps someday she can be “Client of the Month” like her husband.
What is one fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
I had perfect attendance from Kindergarten through graduating High School.
It probably helped that almost all my family members work for the East Providence School Department. My Dad was the head of the history department and my tennis coach, my Mom worked at the middle school, my cousin was my history teacher and baseball coach, my uncle was my guidance counselor. My aunt and several cousins also worked there, and now my sister and her husband both teach there, too!
What is your favorite exercise and why?
People I train with would probably guess that is lying on the floor. Since that may not qualify as an exercise, I will go with dead lifts. They are great for your back when done correctly, and it really is hard to get the form down perfectly. It is such a challenge, and I am still working on it with the help of all the coaches.
What is your biggest gym achievement so far?
It is more of a big picture achievement, and it is that I now consider it very abnormal if I do not strength train regularly. It is just part of my life now, like sleeping, eating, watching “days of our lives”, embarrassing my children, etc.
What inspires and motivates you?
I want to stay functional as I age. I would love to be able to ride my bike across Europe when I retire, and what I do now will greatly determine if I am capable of doing that in 25 years.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining or who has just joined DPT?
You will gain so much from being a part of this gym, I literally wish everyone had a place to train like Durbrow Performance. You will feel, and see, increases in strength and confidence. Also, how great it feels to be part of a very supportive community. Gyms can be intimidating, and that can keep people away. Callie has built a gym that eliminates that, there is no need to feel nervous or vulnerable here.
