Curb Your Sugar Cravings with Cinna-Coconut Apples

Sugar cravings. Yep, we have all had them from time to time. Some of us more than others…

I am a total sugar junkie. Bread, pasta, even cheese, I’m all set with that and have no problem cutting it out. But my beloved ice cream, peanut butter cups, those super sweet Jelly Belly flavored jelly beans, that’s my shit right there.

Yeah you know what I’m talking about, that sweet tooth that comes creepin’ up after you eat and you just want a little “something sweet.”

I’ve even had days when I wake up in the morning and my body is craving chocolate. There are several reasons for these creepers…

  • Deficiencies in certain minerals
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress
  • Exhaustion
  • Lack of activity (feeling sluggish)
  • Dehydration

If I look at my own personal patterns, the creeper cravings come on usually during one or a combination of these circumstances that I listed above. Obviously the first remedy is to get all of the sleep, stress and hydration in order.

I also wanted to share with you something that really worked well for me. At the gym we focus a lot on the Paleo and Primal approach to eating. I was a big fan of this for a long time and I was always about 80% Paleo.

About 2 months ago when I switched to pretty much 100% Paleo, I noticed a big change. For me eating Paleo became an easy thing to do. I was personally trying to simplify my life and my nutrition. This gave me a great direction to stick with and one surprising thing happened.

I no longer craved the sugar.

Me, the person who pretty much says the sweeter the better when it comes to my treats, didn’t even want that said treat. I typically let myself have 1-2 treats a week like ice cream or maybe a cupcake, but after a few weeks, I didn’t even want that.

One of the important things I learned is to start balancing my food intake with natural sugars from things like fruit and coconut. Along with a bit of my journey, I also wanted to share a really great recipe for some Cinna-Coconut Apples.

Here’s a link to that in an article I wrote for Fitness RX Women.

I’ll be back with another article next week where I get into more detail about why I made these changes.
